Book Club Hostess, That's Me

I was recently in charge of my ward's Book Club book-of-the-month. I picked Hands of My Father by Myron Uhlberg. It was actually the book suggested by someone else in the other book club I attend in my old ward! When she told us it was about a young boy growing up with deaf parents, I was intrigued and bought it as soon as I could.I was also in charge of our refreshments when we gathered back to discuss the book. This, for me, is a dreaded responsibility. I do not cook or bake very well and the thought of feeding other people something that should taste sweet and yummy stressed me out. However, I did find some fun looking recipes in magazines etc. and was curious to try them out. First I found this layered cake. But it was layered vertically, which totally freaked me out (in a good way). I got the recipe and tried it. It did not work. But I did end up using it as a regular layered (horizontal) cake which was very rich and tasty.

I also saw these Cheesecake Pops in a magazine and thought it didn't sound so hard. I know how to make cheesecake pretty well so I gave 'em a try. The magazine picture had white chocolate covering with sprinkles which made them look very pretty. I wanted the same look so I used white chocolate.
They didn't turn out looking like the ones in the magazine and for all that effort I would rather have, at least, tasted the real chocolate. Next time...if there is a next time that is.
Everyone loved the book and we are on to a new one for the next month...with someone else in charge thankfully!
Here is what else I have been reading lately:
H0me by Julie Andrews a memoir about her early upbringing.
The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer I read it in junior high or high school and thought it was good. So far I like it~again! It is in olde English; which is cool.
Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen so far I have only read a couple pages and it is hard to get into. But I will persevere.
The Egg and I by Betty MacDonald I picked it up from my mom's house yesterday and have only read about half a chapter already but love it. It is funny! Its about a lady in the 40's-50's who follows her husband to Washington where his dream is to have a chicken farm. He loves it; she hates it!
All these links are random...but will give you an idea more about these books.
I am also interested in reading My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult (before seeing the new movie).

Book Club!

Last night I had book club after my class. This month was MY turn to host it and pick the book and make the refreshments. All three: firsts for me. I picked Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Boring, you say? I say Classic.I remember reading it in Jr. High School and loving it. So I thought it would be fun to read it again. Huh. not so much. I got a copy that had alot of footnotes at the bottom; which I liked. Having some explanation for vocabulary and history was helpful. However, it took me forever to read it. Seriously I would read before bed each night and when I was finished I would look at the clock and see that I had read for an hour. Then I would look at the page number and see that I had read five pages. FIVE pages. In ONE hour. Hello, people! That is some slow reading. I would have headaches after reading it and I would be soooo tired. At the book club some people said that they gave up and just watched the movie. And others said that they read the book while watching the movie. Both good suggestions in retrospect. I have actually NEVER seen a movie about R & J (I take that back. I did see West Side Story a while back and see how they are supposed to be similar but I didn't really like it all that much) so I don't think I would have done either of those had I thought of them before. NOW I plan to get the old (1960's) version of the movie and watch it. No Leonardo DiCaprio in 1996. Thank You very much! Not really a fan.I did not have it at my house even though I was the "host." My mom offered her house which meant that I didn't have to clean my house. No brainer. I did however make the desserts. Now, I am not an adventurous person. In the kitchen by far. I did have these recipes which I thought looked yummy and decided to make them. Both for the first time and both the day of the club. No room for error here. The first is called Banana-Sour Cream Cake. Its good and different. And the second is just simple chocolate truffles. They were interesting to make and I probably won't make them again but I had a whim and went with it. I served these with Strawberry Breeze. Its one of our family's favorites and its just in the concentrate isle. I thought the flavor would go well with the banana cake. I didn't do anything fancy with it. Just added water and served with ice.

All said that both desserts were very good; which truly shocked me. I was pretty tired when I got home. I am happy that it is done and that I can just go and visit for a while before its my turn again. It was a fun night and I am proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone (read: into the kitchen) and trying something new.

Book Club Extravaganza!

A couple of Days before the girly party, it was Mom's turn to host the book club. I occasionally attend this book club when I a) remember, b) have read the book and c) can get a baby sitter...The book for this month was called Hidden In Plain View about the underground railroad. It was about how [people against slavery] and slaves would use quilts as signals for helping slaves escape to freedom. I thought it was an interesting book and had never considered that subject before. It was a little textbook-ish. But since it was about quilts, it held my interest.

Since it was about quilts which Mom loves as well, and since it was Mom who was hosting this time, she went all out. I dare say she went overboard. She made about a half dozen different desserts all quilt themed. I got a pic of the table before everything was put out, but there were quilt shaped cookies, mini cakes, pizzas and a patchwork veggie tray. Plus she made Bear Claw pastries for the first time that day since the bear's claw was one of the quilt blocks used in the underground railroad code...They were delish, but she said it took 7 hours to make them; let alone all the other yummy treats.

Mom also had made two of each quilt block used in the code: one for a wall hanging and one for a bed sized quilt. I don't have those photos here, maybe when they're all put together. AND she also had a gift bag for each lady who attended. They drew from a bowl and got the name of a quilt block, then they went to the table and matched the name with the block on the bags. It was fun. We all got matching nightgowns...the only thing not quilt themed...these were book themed since we are a book club.

Thanks Mom. It was fun and you need to rest after that project.
